Society for Rural Scholars (SFRS)

Our society is often asked how we can be optimistic about the future of our country. We remain hopeful because while there are daunting problems, we are confident in our solution for these obstacles - education. Education is the gold at the end of the rainbow, it is the path to opportunity, it is the ultimate prize. To truly eradicate the inequities that divide our country, education must be the right of every person.

It is not enough to simply acknowledge this problem - in order to make a difference, we must all take action. Both the public and the private sectors must invest in our children’s future. The Society for Rural Scholars Foundation was created in response to this call. Our motto is: “A foundation investing in promising futures”. We wish to solve this critical problem of access to education that faces so many students and their families in our homeland.

A child’s birth should not determine its educational opportunities. All India’s children deserve the chance to receive a world-class education which will allow them to blossom into fully realized individuals. To assist this metamorphosis within each child, the Rural Society sponsors scholarships to disadvantaged students across the country who demonstrate academic excellence and strong leadership skills. These scholarships assist students in meeting the cost of attendance at the school of their choice.
Scholars who choose to pursue studies in the areas of mathematics, finance, science, languages, engineering, and medicine are eligible to receive continued funding. While the state continues the difficult work of creating high quality institutions from which all students graduate and learn to face global challenges, we must aim to remove the financial barriers that prevent so many low income students from pursuing higher educational goals. Private assistance is a critical measure in bringing true equality to the Indian educational system in the rapidly changing dynamics of our present system.

Providing opportunities to the impoverished rural youth is critical to the economic and civic health of rural India. Developing the next generation of leaders will require supporting qualified students, who are driven to learn, yet may not have the financial resources to continue their learning. In establishing the Rural Scholars program, the foundation hopes to create a network of future leaders from around the state, who will bring new vision and intense commitment to improving the life of citizens in our state. Over time, we anticipate that these rural scholars will become leaders in helping to address problems relating to health, equity, technology, moral values, learning - all areas in which India, and the world, must be invested. We expect, over time, to see these scholars forming an integral, dynamic part of the rural network and bringing their vision and new ideas to improving the lives of citizens throughout the state.

We believe education is the cornerstone of human development. When education takes hold, life improves by all measures. On the other hand, poor education aggravates poverty, which deepens disease. The Society for Rural Scholars Foundation aims to create long-term, systemic changes. Ultimately, our students will become the mentors and guardians of the next generation and their successes will lead to the future triumphs of their children.
